Post 2: Students' Guidebook

Dear All,

we started discussing last time what kinds of experiences the students around the world have while studying. You had a chance to get acquainted with one of the Students' Guidebooks.

Now, I'm inviting you to work on the section of a similar guidebook but written by the students for the students.

You have made some suggestions about the content of your section, so let's spend some time drafting it and then I'll introduce you to a piece of software using which we can create an electronic version of your guidebook

  1. Accomodation:
Students are free to choose one variant from three possible when it comes to solving residential problems. The first choice is to live in the dormitory sutuated within the university campus, five minute walk from the university building. It is accessible for everyone, and the cost is quite compromissive: about 1000 rubles per a month (approximately 15 $). International students are stationed in spacious enough double-rooms in block-type lodgement. A block usually consists of two rooms and a bath rooom. There is a kitchen equiped with every necessary kind of appliance and leisure room on each floor. The second choice depends on the university. Sometimes it takes responsibility for finding a host family for international students. In this case cost of living varies. And the last choice is to rent a flat. This variant is the most exp[ensive one because cost is quite high as well as a student encounters some difficulties to find an available flat. Such flats are much in demand as the number of students is reallu great.

    1. Polina,

your post is quite informative and gives a good idea about the living conditions the students can be offered on campus. What is your situation? Which of the choices you have listed you would prefer yourself and why?

    2. A note about the language use: I learned from you that you have invented a word "compromissive" and think it is a great way to play with the language because it can help you to feel it better and build a more profound understanding of its peculiarities. I think it's great:)

  2. Sports:
Sports are an inherent part of student’s life. You have an opportunity to attend many sport sections and try different activities, such as volleyball, basketball, football, swimming, skiing and even shooting. In NSU there is a special hall for the basketball players, gymnasium, a tennis court, two halls for material arts and a fitness room. Sport center of NSU includes several outdoor areas: stadium with football field and athletics sectors, two outdoor tennis courts, basketball and streetball courts, small sandy football field. There are three saunas in the training and sports center of NSU. Sauna brings great benefits, helping to relieve stress, improve mood, normalize sleep and appetite. By the way, sport center of NSU will please you with acceptable prices and staff who are always ready to help you.

    1. Nastya,

what is your favourite sports activity you do at the on campus? Do you know what your peers' choice is and why? If you had to recommend just one kind of activity to try and get involved in, what would it be?

    2. My favourite sports activity is skiing. It gives me an opportunity not only to do sports but also to spend some time at the open air. That's why I would recommend it to other people. Unfortunately, I don't know me peers' choice.

    3. Nastya,

can you provide some more details about your favourite sports activity? When did you learn to ski? Do you remember some funny or unusual situation connected with your experience in learning to do it?

Do you think that the knowledge of foreign languages is a key to success? You are absolutely right! English, Chineese, Hebrew? Ukranian or Italian? Or perhaps you just want to have fun communicating with native speakers and practicing your skills? Welcome to Summer Linguistic School!
Summer Linguistic School - is a ten-days school for teenagers from 14 to 18, who are interested in foreign languages and want to 'dip into' the atmosphere of different countries and their cultures.
The opportunity to be a part of such a great event was a wonderful experience for both of us. Practicing our English skills and hanging out with new friends - these are the reasons to take part in it not only for pupils, but also for foreign students. Guaranteed, you will enjoy it!

  4. Yulia,

a note on the use of the "dash": the way you have done it is common for Russian; in English a colon can be used in this case.

    1. And one more thing: the spelling of ”практика“ in English is "practice" and "практиковать" is spelt with the letter 'S'i.e., "to practise" for the verb.

  5. There are several places to eat in the university.

    - Dobryanka. You can buy a full meal there, but the food can be stodgy and greasy, and it isn't exactly cheap. The biggest downside is that the queues are really long and slow-moving.
    - Cafeteria. Here you can buy the cheapest bottle of water, and many people like their hamburgers and sandwiches. It also offers some supermarket products (yoghurts, candy bars, chips, etc.)
    - Cava (sova). They sell the most popular and delicious sandwiches and bagels. Many people also enjoy their coffee, cocoa and other drinks.
    - 333. They don't offer many food options, but they make pretty good smoothies.
    - Kuzina. They have a ton of options for coffee-drinkers, and they sell a lot of different pastries (doughnuts, muffins, cinnabons, etc.)
    - Puerto. It's quite an expensive place, not that many people go there. But their coffee is considered to be good.
    - Kukuruza. They offer whole meals. For whatever reason, it isn't a popular place, but some people still like it.

    1. Hello Nastya,

thanks for sharing this information. It's quite detailed but probably would benefit from adding a personal touch. What I mean is adding some feedback from your peers about these places:
      Do they have a favourite?

What's their favourite food in this place?

Anything about what makes a particular place special for the student? Some personal examples would be great!

  6. I've just mentioned that it's possible to create a real electronic guidebook with the help of https://www.flipsnack.com/digital-guide. Let's have a look at it now and decide whether you'd like to use it to create your guidebook

  7. In our university you can participate in a great number of activities. Some of them are part of the studying process and others are extracurricular.
Let's start from the obligatory part. According to the rules of the university, every semester you are offered a list of extra courses which are required to be passed in order to get your diploma. These courses can be online and like usual lectures that you have during your study time. So you choose one and the adventure starts. Don't be bothered about your choice because each course has a material which gives the information about the topics you don't have during your ordinary study programe, so for sure you will get an amazing experience.
As for the extracurricular activity, first thing is that you can join some student clubs such as music, dance, or humorous clubs. These clubs are for those who wants to start doing something new or just master their skills in the current activity and, of course, make some friends. One more thing is that often professors organize extra events connected with the topic you are discussing in the class or which are just interesting for your speciality. You can have a chance to see new technological inventions, visit a museum or an art gallery, and so on. For example, our group has already visited for several times lectures about famous spanish painters.
So, in any case you will have a great time.

thanks for sharing this information: it's quite detailed and informative. What would be great to add is what I refer to as a "personal touch", i.e., some examples from your own experience or that of your peers.

  14. Together with Dasha we discussed the idea of making a guide book about some places in our university where you can relax and do your homework peacefully. We suppose this information will help students to feel more comfortable during the studyng process at NSU.
