Dear All,
I hope you are doing fine and will enjoy doing these tasks tomorrow in class.
Here is what I'm asking you to do:
1. Go to the website of the newspaper The Guardian and find a short news story in the section Culture at https://www.theguardian.com/uk/culture. It should be devoted to the discussion of some topic of interest to you.
2. Prepare the article summary 150-70 words long and explain in 1 sentence what got you interested in it.
3. Divide into pairs and work together with your peer. You should do the following:
- group A: Choose 5-6 words from the articles you have worked which you think are important to the text and useful for you to remember. For each word find a definition and make your own examples with these words. Publish them in the thread.
- group B: Find 3 connected stories to the news story you have chosen at step 1. For each connected story, post the web address and one-sentence description of the story.
- group C: Read one of the articles your peers have chosen at step 1 and ask them 3 questions about it:
a) to clarify smth in it for yourself: smth that you did not understand or would like to learn more about
b) to find out why your peer got interested in the article and what s/he learned from it s/he did not know
c) a "Wild Card" question: ask a question of your choice about the article

Dear All,
ReplyDeleteI've just mentioned the name of Meryl Streep, one of the finest American film actresses and would like to share with you the information about her and her filmography from IMDB.com (this is the largest movie database with lots of interesting information about everything connected with films). If you are familiar with it, great! If not yet, this is a chance for you to do it.
So. here is a link to Meryl Streep's filmography: https://m.imdb.com/name/nm0000658/filmotype/actress?ref_=m_nmfm_1
And one of my favourite films with her is Bridges of Madison County and The Hours, they are both both heart-breaking and thought-provoking. It'd be great if you chose to watch one of them and shared your opinion about it.
DeleteI've chosen this article https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2018/jun/27/being-human-realistic-robots-google-assistant-androids
ReplyDeleteThe topic of machines and humans is really interesting to me because technological progress is developing everyday: different human-like robots, home-assistant robots, household androids flooded the market.
These are some new words that I found:
grapple - сцепиться, бороться, сталкиваться
e.g. Suddenly angry student grappled with the man.
encroach - посягать, вторгаться, покушатсья на чужие права
e.g. Rather than encroach on his privacy, she might have kept to her room.
sanctity - священность
e.g. The site of the tomb was a place of sanctity for the ancient Egyptians.
impinge - посягать
e.g. Sarah was determined that the tragedy would impinge as little as possible on Nataly's life.
premise - предпосылка
e.g. If the premise is true, then the conclusion must be true.
Asia,
Deletethanks for sharing the list of words with their Russian equivalents; what you need to add to make this task more useful is the explanations of these words from an English-English dictionary
Do you have a favourite one or use different ones on different occasions?
DeleteI have chosen an article which is called «No Netflix films at Cannes for second year running, reports suggest» written by Catherine Shoard on 18th of March. It is devoted to the theme of Cannes and discussions about Netflix films.
ReplyDeleteReports suggest that no Netflix films will now screen at Cannes, either in or out of competition. The reason is that «variety has revealed that not only has Cannes failed to figure out a workable compromise, but none of the mooted Netflix titles is sufficiently complete for a May premiere.»
However, there will be a lot of non-Netflix films such as Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and James Gray’s Ad Astra. By the way, in both films the main character is Brad Pitt.
The reason why I have decided to read exactly this article is that I am really interested in the theme of Cannes, film industry and I like watching Netflix seriales and movies.
Hello Nastya,
DeleteThanks for the explanation. Actually, I've just read this article because one of your peers from another group has chosen it too. Can you share a list of 3-4 films that are your favourites and add what makes them such
https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/mar/18/no-netflix-films-at-cannes-martin-scorsese-the-irishman
DeleteI really like the serial "Stranger Things", "Lucifer" and the film "Bird Box".
DeleteI like to watch and rewatch Stranger Things and Bird Box when I want to tickle my nerves because they both are some kind of horrors.
I see. Thanks for the explanation. Which one would you recommend to watch if you had to choose one?
DeleteI've chosen the article "From vibrating beds to infinity mirrors: motels that never left the 70s – photo essay" because I like the stories about nostalgic things such as old music or old places that give me an opportuniry to think about that period.
ReplyDeleteIn this article, Jenny Valentish tells us a story about Kate Barry who has takes pictures of old motels from the 70's and the 80's for her instagram account. Kate had had an idea to archive pictures of old motels when she discovered that many of them are unchanged from that time and so there is a special atmosphere of nostalgia. Kare takes her photos spontaneously but it looks like they were made by professoinal photographer because they are of good quality enough ans there are not so many paople who could so the same. During her trip she found a lot of beautiful places that looked like "the time stood still" such as the El Toro Motel in Numurkah, Victoria, a Hacienda-style building with white stucco exterior and an outdoor spiral staircase. All in all she found that her life has been enriched thank to this experience. She has not only took pictures of old matels but found new friends who supported her interesting idea.

DeleteHow very interesting! I'll definitely read this article too later today and share my impression about it with you
DeleteDasha, let me remind you that summaries are written in a slightly different form, namely, their parts should be connected with linking words. You can revise it by accessing the summary template at https://docs.google.com/document/d/1SjNsqYrAKOm8t9ysNEQVKr0QEoWzi0YSeAHg56XXkQc/edit
DeleteI’ve chosen an article “Otters love it! Inside Windermere's magical new £20m museum”. It is very interesting to read. I like museums and architecture, that is why this article has impressed me so much.
ReplyDeleteThe article “Otters love it! Inside Windermere's magical new £20m museum” written by Oliver Wainwright is devoted to the discussion of the Windermere Jetty Museum of Boats, Steam and Stories. First, the author draws our attention to it’s appearance. “Viewed from the water – visitors will be able to arrive via ferry – its pitched-roof volumes blend into the surrounding trees, like a group of innocuous barns. As you get closer, their special quality becomes clearer. Great chunks have been carved out of their sides, leaving rooftops floating with surreally deep overhangs, while their black-oxidised copper walls shimmer with a faint verdigris patina”, writes the author. Then he analyzes the internal content. The author suggests that the museum shows the beauty and workmanship of the precious boats.

DeleteNastya,
Deletethanks. What an interesting museum! It's good you included a quotation from the article about the museum. It indeed gives the readers the flavour of it. But let me remind you too that usually summaries are written in your own words and it's not common to have some quoted excerpts in them.
I have chosen an article about music. To be exact, it is about the greatest banned songs of all time. It is called the same. This article contains twenty songs that were too scandalous to be accepted in society at the time of their release. The top starts with the song that called Ronald Raegan a “fascist god in motion”. So of course it got banned by BBC. The next song is My Generation by The Who, which was banned for apparently promoting nihilism. Lady Gaga’s Judas was also banned from the radio for religious reasons. The Beatles’ Happiness is a Warm Gun was misunderstood and banned for being about drugs. Queen’s I Want to Break Free was banned for the drag music video. All in all, I found the article very interesting because I am interested in music and I like many songs listed in it.

DeleteSophia,
Deletethanks for your choice of the article and letting us know what it is about. I'll have to remind you that actually summaries are written in a somewhat different way. I have just shared this information in my comment to Nastya Petukhova. Please, follow the link in it to the academic summary template
I have just read an interesting article and I’d like to share it with you.
ReplyDeleteThe article “Dying of the light: why Hollywood needs to get over its obsession with terminally ill teens” written by Steve Rose is devoted to the discussion of the problem of overusing a theme of a romance which occurred between terminal ill teenagers. Of course, this topic can’t be touching and absorbing; however audience gets tired of it as there are so many films devoted to this doomed but so sweet love. First, the author draws our attention to the reasons of renewed interest of the topic “Teenage terminal illness”. Such things as “despair, alienation, suffering, seize-the-day recklessness, inbuilt tragedy” can’t make us indifferent, it is worth to see. But you may agree that Hollywood became addicted to this topic, they are absolutely obsessed with it and audience begins to lose interest in it. S/he gives a list of example of resembling films: The Fault in Our Stars, Everything, Everything, Now Is Good
The author concludes that sometimes this kind of films can give a poor example of behavior. For example, in Five Feet Apart people with CF must not come within six feet of each other, however the main characters broke the rules.

DeleteTereza,
Deleteyour summary gives a good idea about the article content and is logical and well-organised. However, I have noticed the following problems:

Hollywood **became addicted to this topic: Gr > do you remember what tense is used to report the results of actions?
Frozen is an American musical fantasy cartoon produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. Frozen was nominated for various awards and won a number of them, including several for Best Animated Feature. It is one of the most interesting and famous cartoons for people all over the world.
ReplyDeleteI’ve chosen the article by Chris Wiegand «Frozen musical to reopen London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2020» https://bit.ly/2HtNirE, 19 Mar. 2019. It’s told that this story about two sisters will be played at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane. It will be directed by Michael Grandage and choreographed by Rob Ashford, with set and costume designs by Christopher Oram. Londoners are waiting for the play.
This article will be interesting for theatre-goers and fans of this cartoon.
Rimma,
Deletethanks for sharing this information about the Review of "Frozen" I'm sure it'd interesting to watch it. Probably, you should have included some more details about the plot for your readers to get more interested in it.
I have chosen the article «Frozen musical to reopen London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2020». In 2020 the great Disney show of the famous film «Frozen» will be on the stage. «Frozen» is an extremely popular cartoon, a joyous story about love and sisterhood.
ReplyDeleteThe writer for the musician is Jennifer Lee. The show includes 13 new songs (what is quiet obvious because it’s a musical performance). It was already nominated for three Tony awards. Probably, the expectations from the show are rather high. Still, as for the casting for the production, it has not yet been announced.
The writers of the music and lyrics in this show are a married couple, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez. According to them, it was absolute pleasure to work with this story, which full of love and kindness.
The show will be full of songs, dances, great players, and costumes. Don’t miss it in November 2020.

I have chosen an article "The teenage dandy's tale: how a female biographer saw Chaucer afresh" written by Alison Flood. The topic is about Geoffrey Chaucer and some new facts about his biography. Alison Flood writes that Geoffrey Chaucer had a great influence on people`s mind in that time, especially on women who followed the fashion. He also wrote about men`s behaviour and how they should treat women.
ReplyDeleteThe new words I found useful to remember:
congenial - близкий, родственный
revere - почитать
refined - утонченный
biased - пристрастный
explicitly - точно
afresh - сызнова

Hello Nastya,
Deletethanks for the explanation.
Only I was quite surprised with you prepared the list of useful words. I am sure you know that just giving the translation does not allow you to receive enough information to be able to use the words. You should have given the context in which the words are used and their explanation in English. It's a mimimum to be able to use new words correctly.

ReplyDeleteI have chosen an article "Judith Kerr: ‘I like this generation of teenagers. They seem kind and idealistic’." Because I would like to know why she considers modern teenagers as pretty and flawless people. It is devoted to the importance of clildhood in in every person’s life.
ReplyDeleteAs we all know, many of adults consider teenagers as peole who are addicted to their mobile-phones and who prefer chatting in social networks rather than talking face to face. Hovewer, Judith Kerr, the author of 35 books for children, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Kerr
thinks that this generation of teenagers is ideal. She suggests parents to spend more time with their children, instead of blaming them for being too addicted to their mobile phones.
Besides, she has her own theory about life. In her opinion our life can be divided into 2 parts: The first half is when a person is under the age of 18. All the rest counts as the second half. She supposes that childhood is a very important part of life, as children at this age try to communicate with each other, learn essential skills, like writing or reading and so on.
Despite her age, (Judith Kerr is 95 now), she keeps on writing every day!
In addition, she is the author of ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’. By the way, Judith Kerr has sold more than four million copies of children!
Nevertheless, she still believes that she should not waste her time, because there are such a lot of things to do in her life!

DeleteHovewer, Judith Kerr, the author of 35 books for children, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judith_Kerr: it is common to place the links you mention in your posts in brackets. You could, actually should have added a link after the title of her book. Again, it's a common feature of electronic writing.
Here is how it can be done:
In addition, she is the author of ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea' (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1099097.The_Tiger_Who_Came_to_Tea). In addition, you could have also shortened the link to make your post easier to read: https://bit.ly/2P0oEQ. One of the url shorteners is Bit.ly. You need to copy the link from the address line into the url shortener and get the shortened version, which you can then add to your post
