Dear All,
I'm sorry I did not share a new task with you earlier because I had an urgent situation to tackle. I really want this course to be useful and interesting for you and will try to make my best to organise it the way that you will be able to benefit from it the most.
For our today's class I am suggesting you to choose from a list of several topics from the book "Taboos and Issues" by R. MacAndrew and R. Martines. Some of the topics discused in it include the following:
1. Sex for Sale
2. Children who kill
3. Abortion
to name just a few
and below you can see the full list of topics for discussion from the book's back cover. So I'm suggesting you to do the following in class today:
1. Choose 3 topics from the list and first explain why you are interested in discussing them: publish your comment in the thread of the blog below.
2. Then read 2 comments published to have an idea about their choice.
3. Next we're going to choose 1 that will have been selected by the most number of students and this will be the issue we are going to discuss in more detail in class today too and do some exercises and activities from the corresponding unit.
4. After that I'll invite you to choose another article discussing one of the aspects of the problem we'll be discussing together and summarise it using the template I've shared with you. This last activity will be your home task for the next week.
One of the purposes of going through these steps is to help you articulate your interests and preferences better and be able to explore and then write about the issues of your choice relying on the resources devoted to the discussion of such issues.
Hope you'll find doing it this way beneficial for the development of a number of different skills.
Good luck!

I have decided to take 3 themes, such as:
ReplyDelete1)Addictions
2)Telling lies
3)Marriage - for better or for worse.
As they seem interesting for me to think over.
I'm interested in three topics:
ReplyDelete1) Telling lies
2) Anxiety and depression
3)Are you happy with your body?
This topics are connected with psycology. They will help us to avoid undue self-criticism and to avod depression. The topic telling lies will explain the ways how to identify the lie and why people lie.
This comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI think these topics are the most interesting for discussion:
ReplyDelete1. Sexual harassment
2. Abortion
3. Are you happy with your body?
I chose these topics because, in my view, they became very popular nowadays because of the spreading of the phenomena such as feminism and body-positive.
Hello Dasha,
Deletethanks for the explanation. All your choices deserve attention and I think will be interesting to discuss. As I have explained, we'll start with the topic more people select as their number 1 choice and then we'll also discuss some others that many students in your group feel to be important.
I am interested in topic 'National stereotypes' because I want to know more about it.
ReplyDeleteAlso I would like to talk about 'Animals rights'. I think it is horrible that in modern world the problem of cruelty to animals still exists.
And the last topic which I want to discuss is 'Anxiety and depression'. I think it is important to know how to avoid such problems and what to do if you have them.
I have chosen the topics "Animal rights", "Nobody needs a gun" and "Begging" because I was interested in them since high school and these are common problems, which are widespread throughout the world.
ReplyDeleteHello, my friends!
ReplyDeleteIn my view, every totic is really interesting to discuss, but i have to choose only three of them:
1. National stereotypes (This problem is urgent for all times, and people are still learning how to be tolerant).
2. Cheating on your partner (I`ve come across this problem in my life and i want to found out the reasons of cheating).
3. Anxiety and depression (Almost everyone has ever been depressed. So, i would like to learn more about the ways of getting rid of this felling).
1. Children who kill
ReplyDeleteI've chosen this topic because there are many incidents of kids' cruelty.
2.Gay families.
I picked this theme due to the fact of legalization of same-sex marriage in some countries.
3.Legalasing drugs.
Grugs are the constant problem around the whole world. Wether should governments legalize it?
Dear All,
ReplyDeletein the end it was decided to discuss the topic of National Stereotypes because it's less acute but hopefully will give us a lot to discuss and argue about.
Look through the article and share with us anything that surprised you. Also check what surprised some of your peers and share your opinion about theirs.
DeleteThis article seems to be extremely amusing. I didn't expect Brazilians to be the best tourist in the world, and Germans and the French as impolite and rude. I thought the situation is vice versa.

Tereza,
Deletethanks for sharing your thoughts about various groups of tourists from different parts of the world. Indeed, it is surprising that the French turned out to be such bad tourists. However, as I have menioned in my comment to smb else, I have a question about how reliable the results of this survey are. What I mean is how many people took part in it, because if this number is about several hundred people, then it's not reliable, meaning you cannot use these results to make far-reaching conclusions about whatever issue is considered.
Here is more information about reliability of survey results from wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reliability_%28statistics%29. It is a long article, but you can read the introduction to get an idea about it
DeleteI find this article really interesting and useful. I was surprised with description of Brazilians and Germans. I think this article shows that stereotypes could be incorrect.

Well, yes, they are often incorrect, which is in the end their essence. At best, they can be only partially true. So, it's best to remember it when judging people or situations. Well, yes, many English words are of French origin but it does not change the fact that they are often bad at English. I'd like to share with you an article from Quora devoted to the discussion of this question: https://www.quora.com/Why-are-the-French-especially-bad-at-English. It'd be great if you looked through it and shared your opinion about it in the thread.

Me too. It was pretty surprising to learn that the Germans are considered to be rude. I wonder what the basis for this conclusion was. Yes, it is said the survey was conducted by the Am Board of Tourism but there is no statistics to get an idea how representative the survey was.
DeleteAs for me, I have known all of these facts before, exept the fact about Germans. I always thought that these people are one of the most polite tourists due to their possibility of traveling all around the world. I have an experience facing with German tourists, but I had never noticed something rude and impatient in their behaviour.

Dear All,
ReplyDeleteI can see that this is a topic you have been eager to discuss. Am I right? If yes, I have a suggestion to go a bit deeper into this discussion: shall we consider the effects of stereotyping? Is it nothing more than a subtle form of racism? Does it have some negative effects? If so, what? Or is it no more than a little harmless fun?
I googled "the effects of stereotyping" and see that there is a broad range of different materials on this topic. I think it could be interesting for us to look into this. We can look through 1 or 2 pqges of hits, get an idea about the content of the web-pages devoted to the discussion of this topic and choose a couple for a more detailed study.
ReplyDeleteAre you interested in doing it? Hope you are. See you in class shortly.
DeleteDear Natlia Yurievna, it was really amazing to read about "the effects of stereotyping", I found several pages about it and I'd like to sum them up. Firstly, we should admit that all stereotypes, even if they seem to be positive, are considered to be negative.Secondly, Stereotypes affect on a person's self-esteem badly. A person hesitates in his own forces and starts to auto-suggest and after all it leads to failures. And what is the really sad part is that stereotypes make people blind as they condemn a person without knowing him.
ReplyDeleteTeresa,
Deleteit's great you have read more on the effects of stereotyping. Can you share the information about the resources you have read? It would be useful if you added the name of the author, the title of the article, a link to it and when it was published. Here is an example of how you can do it: Nauert, R. Long-term effects of stereotyping (https://psychcentral.com/news/2010/08/11/long-term-effects-of-stereotyping/16675.html)
Teresa,
DeleteI also wanted to comment on "hesitate in his own forces": it is a word-for-word translation from Russian, and people who do not speak Russian will not understand you. The English equivalent of this Russian phrase is "to distrust one's powers", though as you will see there are just 3 hits with it. Multitran gives the word "mistrust" in the same combination, but if you google it, you will see that google suggests the words "distrust".
Good evening, Natlia Yurievna, thank you! I'll keep that in mind!
DeleteGood afternoon! The topic "The effects of stereotyping" really cought my attention. While searching some websites, I run onto a very surpising fact. Have you ever imagined how much stereotypes affect on our mind? One research shows that men who look at picture of blond girls have slower mental processing because of the famous stereotype of believing that blond women are less intelligent. Another one tells us that when people are in a company of old people they become slower and act more calmly. These are the perfect examples of stereotype influence.
ReplyDeleteJulia,
Deletethanks for finding and reading the articles you have mentioned. Let me just remind you that it's necesary to include the information about the resource you have used. You can read more about it in my comment to Tereza above.
I should probbly have first mentioned that the article you have found are really interesting. Thanks for doing it.

DeleteI'm sorry but I've decided point to a couple of things you have made mistakes in in your response.
