Post 6: Week 8 (23 - 30 October)

Dear All,

I've commented on all your posts about stereotypes and would like to ask you to comment back if there is smth else to add. I really like the way you've been working and hope you will keep your enthusiam and positive attitude to writing throughout the whole year.

For the next week I'm suggesting discussing one more issue from the book Taboos and Issues that was on the list of your preferred topics for discussion. Let it be "Anxiety & Depression", which is not a joyful topic to discuss, but I think it is necessary to know more about the causes and consequences of depression to be able to withstand it.

I'll share the materials with you later tonight.

Have a great week!

PS: I would like to share with you the information about the Combinatory Dictionary of English one more time as a reminder, though I've checked I shared it with you before in the post What to consider when writing: https://acwr17827.blogspot.com/2018/10/things-to-consider-when-writing.html
It'd be great if you saved it in your bookmarks and started using it.

  1. Dear All,

Are you ready for the discussion of one of the Taboo topics we agreed to dip into? I realise fully well that it's not at all exciting, however it's really important to discuss and do smth about it.

First, we'll get acquainted with the results of one survey conducted in Britain aimed at getting an idea about whether its partucipants experienced these states and what can be done about it.

Next we'll discuss a number of mental conditions and you'll have a chance to do some research into their essence and consequences. Choose one condition from the list below and Google it. Start with Wikipedia.
Here's a list of problems to consider:
    Chronic fatigue syndrome
    Seasonal affective disorder
    Post-traumatic stress disorder
    Road rage
    Your own choice

What you need to do is read the information about the chosen disorder and share the summary of information about it in the thread. Focus on answering the question what new information you have learned from the chosen resource & what further questions about it you would like to investigate.

  2. One more task to complete is about the vocabulary to learn from your article. Choose 8 expressions useful in the discussion of the topic and share your examples with them in the thread.

  3. After reading this text we were quite surprised with the statistics and the results provided in this article. Before this time we have never thought deeply about such problems as depression and anxiety. But those numbers turned our minds upside down as they were terrifying.
Happiness is the most important value for human beings. While discussing this topic we found out that we are completely happy and satisfied with our lives. It is hard to choose one of the happiest moments and we came to conclusion that every time we smile - we are the happiest we have ever been!

    4. Thanks for sharing your opinions. It's understandable you found the statistics terrifying. It's. What it made me think about is whether anything can be done about this situation. Do you think there's a way to deal with it?

    5. Perhaps many people suffer from these deseases in case of lack of hobbies and activities that could bring them unforgettable emotions. Plus, the surrounding of a person plays a huge part in his or her life, as it can help to switch his/her attention off some problems and make their life brighter.
One of the possible ways to avoid suffering from anxiety and depression is an active social life.

    6. Hello, Yulia & Nastya, thanks for sharing your response with your peers and me!I really like your suggestion about having an active lifestyle Do you? Can you share a couple of examples if you have them? What can be done to encourage (young) people to be active?

  6. Me and Roman Banaev were not surprised by these statistics in general since the century we live in is a very frightening time where bullying & anxiety exist. However, I was shocked that one in ten felt that life was not worth living. Roma thought the number was bigger than 1 in 10. We didn't find it new that teenagers were worried about their appearance. First of all, it's their age. Second of all, these days a lot of people judge or are being judged based on their looks.
Me & Roma are happy with our lives because we have loving families, supportive friends, a place to live in, we are getting education. But different people have different values, and therefore the number of things needed for happiness may vary.
We can't think of any particular moment that we can call the happiest, but tend to consider many moments of our lives special and exciting. Those little moments build one huge happiness.
And, finally, what is happiness, really? Due to our age, we cannot give it a proper deifition, but what we agree on is that it is a beautiful feeling inside that makes you a better person and motivates you to live a more fulfilling life.

    3. Sophia & Roman, thanks for such a thoughtful comment. I share your emotions about the fact mentioned in the article about the number of people that think their life is not worth living. It says a lot about the state of the society, doesn't it? However, what is satisfying is that you personally find your lives rich from different perspectives. Keep it this way. Good luck!

  7. After reading the article I wondered that so many people are so unsatisfied with their life. Nevertheless, I'm not surprised there are a lot of teenagers who are worried about their appearance. Such a condition can be usual for people during this lifetime. I'm sure, most of them will grow it up and will kmow much more incredible things about life.

As for me, I'm quite satisfied with my life. I do my best to improve it and bring new things and emotions in my days.

I don't remember clearly the happiest moment in my life, but I'm sure it's much more important that I can't remember the worst one or simply bad ones. It means every moment in my life is unique, and I enjoy each of it.

Thinking about what is happiness I turn to my family and friends. There is no better thing to know they are alright.

  8. To tell you the truth, I'm really surprised that so many people are not satisfied with their lives. It's quit sad, you know.
As for me, I'm happy personn. I have loving parets, the best friends, interesting occupation and all of ir make me the happiest person in the whole world.
The happiest moment in my life was about 3 years ago, when I was in "Artek". An amazing place, beautiful nature, and pleasant people made those 3 weeks to be the best part of my life.
I suppose that each of us has her or his own definision of what happiness is. And as for me, I am happy when my parents, frends and people who surround me are happy. It really makes me happy too.

    2. Hello Julia,

What a wonderful experience you had in Artek! I'm sure you have unforgettable memories about it! I quite agree with you that for different people happiness means different things but I think that for the majority family and friends are a very important part of it. Are you familiar with the World Happiness Report published annullally by the UNO? I'd like to share a link to the most recent one & would like to ask you to look through it and share with us the information that you will have found the most interesting in the context of our discussion: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/World_Happiness_Report

  9. As for me, I am not surprised with such grieved statistics. I think pessimism is coded genetically; therefore, when something goes wrong, people tend to get depressed easily. But for Julia, it was suprising: she is so sad that there are so many unhappy people in Britain.
When it comes to my life, I am quite satisfied with it. Though it could be better if I had made other decisions in this or that life situations, by anyway there is no point in regreting about it now. I have what I need,my nearest and dearest and a good health, and I am happy with it. So Yulia is.
But the happiest moments in our lives flashed up into our memory when we bring back to our childhood. Yulia was absolutely over the moon during her staying in "Artek' while I recall all my childhood filled with happiness. I had no computer to distract, so every minute of my free time I spent outside no matter which weather was. With my friends we made up different games and it was difficult to make us go home.
So, we came to the conclusion that happiness is when people around you is happy. Besides, you yourself is the creator of your own happiness. If you try to find something good in every day, something that make you feel in the seventh heaven, then you will be the most happiest person in the world.

  10. 1. I'm not surprised by these statistics, because often people study things they don't like and want to be perfect.
    2. As for me, happiness is not a permanent state, in that case it would be a habit.
    3. I was really happy when I passed my exams at the end of the first course.

  11. 1) I'm surprised by these statistics, but Yana isn't. She thought that the number of depressed people would be higher, because of the social preassure and photoshopped pictures of models. Teenagers take this at face value and think it's real.
    2) We are happy about our lives. We accept ourselves for who we are. From our point of view people have only a present day and they should enjoy every moment.
    3) Our lives are full of happy moments. Because the comprehension of the world depends on our minds.
    4) What is the happiness? It's a really difficult question. Yana and I think that happiness consist of support, love of your family, parents, friends and unforgettable moments with them.

  12. On today's lesson my groupmate, Nastya Vakarina, and I have discussed a very important topic which is called "Anxiety and depression."
We both are not suprised with the statistic which is presented in the text. We think that discontent about the weight and general appearance is very popular among young people all around the world, not only in Britain. In addition to that, we agree that everybody has bad periods in their life, when everything seems terrible and they do not have a way out of this or that situation, but through some time people feel happy after all. So we think that every person is basically happy with his or her life, so do we.
Nastya and I think that the definition of happiness is different for every person, so it is quite hard to say what happiness is in general. As for me, happiness is the moments, a lot of moments during all our life, when we feel happy due to some events etc., so I do not think that happiness is equal to the lifegoal (great family, successful carrier or another dreams) as most of the people believe.
To sum up, I would like to say that people have to discuss such topics oftener because nowadays this problem is very important and serious.

    1. I have found Seasonal Affective disorder (SAD) very interesting to know about. I did not know that this type of depression which is caused by long, dark winter has a separate name. Usually people feel hopeless and worthless this time of the year. They think about suicide, also they sleep a lot and have problems with waking up in the morning. It is caused due to the lack of sunlight and the difficulties of surviving in cold weather.

To be honest, I have a tendency to this disorder because in winter I always feel tired and want to sleep. Fortunayely, I do not have suicide thoughts, but anyway everything around me seems to be terrible. It is really hard to have such a disorder especially in our region where the snow lays outside for 5 months or more.

    2. Nastya, thank you for your thoughtful response. Indeed what happiness is different for everyone; on the other hand, there're some common features too. I think it's not surprising because in the end we're all people and share some basic common values. I'd like to share a list of core values you can access at http://examples.yourdictionary.com/examples-of-core-values.html. It'd be interesting to learn which 3 are the most important ones for you. Can you have a look at it and share your opinion in the thread?

    1. I believe having enough skills to provide yourself with stuff needed for life, being conscious, making deicisions etc is where happiness lies. You know, it's actually where freedom starts... So I wouldn't consider childhood the happiest. Well, maybe in a way...

    2. What an interesting point of view! Maybe you are right. Having thought about it, I'd probably agree with you. The question though is how to achieve this state. Do you have your own way of doing it?

      Delete
  16. Well, after discussing the problem of depression and axiety with my groupmate Nastia Lobanova, we came to the conclusion that the statistics is not very positive. But, unfortunately, everyone had the same worries about his or her appearance or something like that. It's just a part of our life. If you think about this, that means that you care.

As for me, I cannot say that I'm absolutelly happy with my life. Of course, there're a lot of good people around me and I have everything for a good life. Nevertheless , I suppose that this is not enough for me. Sometimes, I fell the most lonely person in the world and nobody does not want to know me. I hope that I'm wrong.

I agree that I had many happy moments in my life. It's not only some special events such as someone's birthday or something, but an ordinary things like watching an interesting movie or hanging out with a friend who I haven't seen for years. I can't choose only one thing because in's not possible to contain all positive feelings in one day.

In my view, there's no only one definition to the term "happines". Everyone has their own explanation to this. But, in my personal opinion, when your mental and physical health are in harmony it is enough to be quite happy.

    1. Hello Dasha,

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. You mentioned that this statistics reflects our life. Unfortunately, yes. But I also think that individually and together too we can do a lot to make our own life and that of the people around us better. For one thing just try to treat the others the way you'd like to be treated yourself. It's not always easy but possible. Do you think it's?

    1. Hello Polina, on the one hand, I quite agree with you but that nobody but the person herself/himself can help her/himself in such a situation. However, there're too many examples when people were helped in such situations. So, probably the solution is somewhere in between. But one of the difficulties is being willing to help and be ready to accept it. Human relations are no easy matter, no matter how trivial it sounds.

    1. In my view, the statistics are not surprising because almost everybody has ever been dissatisfied with their life.
    2. Although I cannot say I live the way I want to live, I`m quite happy with my life.
3.The happiest moments in my life were when I was a child because I didn`t care much about my future.

  21. 1. Nastya and I were not surprised by these statistics. Many teens and young people talk about their anxiety and depression on the Internet.
    2. Overall, we are both content with our lives.
    3. Childhood have been the happiest part of our lives. I believe the same is true for a majority of other people.
    4. I said that a lot of people understand "happiness" as achievement of their life goals. Nastya said that happiness consists of joyful moments and events in one's life. I agree with her, and I think both these definitions are correct. Happiness is an abstract concept and any other definition of happiness is true simply because different things make different people happy.
