Post 7: Week 9 (November 5-11): Vocabulary Improvement Techniques

I'd like to discuss with you some useful techniques for learning new vocabulary and since your brain is not a blank slate, here is my plan for our today's class.

First, I'd like to ask you to discuss in your groups of 2 or 3 your favourite technique for memorizing, recollecting and brushing up your vocabulary. Share your answers in the thread.

Next, I'm inviting you to read the artile about some strategies for learning vocabulary which are associated with what is known as spaced repetition learning strategies:

https://www.lingualift.com/blog/language-spaced-repetition-learning-srs/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leitner_system

Have you used a similar strategy? If yes, can you share your experience with us by first discussing it with each other and then sharing it in the thread.

After that I'd like to ask you to share the list of dictionaries you use on a regular basis and explain your reasons for your preferences.

Still after that, I'm inviting you to complete the exercises Onestopenglish website aimed at giving you some practice in brushing up your dictionary skills:

http://www.onestopenglish.com/skills/vocabulary/macmillan-dictionary-resources/dictionary-skills/pdf-content/dictionary-skills-part-one-level-three/155816.article

Hope these activities will be useful and give you some idea about how to improve your knowledge of vocabulary further.

If you find some more useful techniques and strategies to master your vocabulary, please share

  1. I discussed the techniques for memorizing with Nastia and Dasha. And we came to the conclusion that repetition and making associations are the best ways to memorize new words.

  2. Together with Sasha Ushkova and Yulia Ufintseva, we figured out that the most spread way to learn new vocabulary is to use the Leitner system. It is a widely spread technique for memorizing new words using flashcards. As 21 is the century of technologies, this system became the basis for special apps that help to simplify this process and save some time avoiding spending it on preparing hand-written cards. One of the examples is Quizlet which is becoming popular among students these days. Quizlet is a mobile study application that allows students to study information via learning tools and games. As our study includes a process of constant words learning, Quizlet is a magic stick that is benefitial at time management and vocabulary learning.

    1. This sounds like you were paid to advertise this app:)
All of these techniques can be useful, especially for beginners, but the best way to learn and memorize vocabulary of a foreign language is to «surround» yourself with that language. It means you can learn foreign words the same way you've learned your native words. Also, speaking and writing helps to develop a good active vocabulary.

  3. My technique for memorizing words is pretty simple, and commonly used among others. I just write new words down and try to remember their meanings. After some time( 4-5 hours) I do the same thing. And later, after a day, I again learn them by heart. So it’s should be mentioned that periods between attempts are increasing.
Another useful way for learning words is by app “Quizlet”. There is a variety of exercises for memorizing which will definitely contribute your success in it

  4. After discussing this topic, we came to the conclusion that techniques for learning new vocabulary are very different and also they are individual for every person. As for me, I prefer learning new vocabulary with the help of the internet for some reasons. Firstly, the internet is the huge base of data and it gives me an opportunity to find whatever I want. And, secondly, the internet help me to save my time. Every time I start to study new topic I try to find as much new words as possible. And, after that I open different resourses, such as online dictionaries and start to read al the definitions that i can find and after some time new knowledge come to my memory.

  6. My groupmates and I have discussed the theme about our favoutite techniques for learning new vocabulary. Firstly, all of us, Nastya Lobanova, Dasha Fedorova and I, agreed that a good way to memorize new words is to write them down many times on the paper. However, this technique is not for the long memory. You can remember them for some time but not for the rest of your life. As for us, the best way is to read books and watch films. It would help you to understand when you can use this or that word properly because you see them in a context.

Moreover, we mentioned the app which is called Quizlet. I used it on the previous course when I had to learn language families. It helped me a lot, and I would really recomend it to other people.

    1. Hello, Nastya:) I'm absolutely agree with you that films and books help us to learn new words. But as for such teckhnique as writing words many times, it actually doesn't work for me, and, to tell you the truth, I just hate write them again and again. I prefer to memorize them orally.

  7. As for me, the most useful and appropriate strategies are memorizing and associating. But if you don’t want your brain become a blank slate after a period of time you should revise your vocabulary regularly. Moreover, it’s essential to learn some words in context in order to use them correctly later and simplify learning process. I often write down new words many times until I learn it by heart. Also there are some apps which are able to help you with learning new wordsHowever, to be honest, I waste more time and get a worse result when I use these apps rather than I use traditional methods (memorizing and etc.)

I agree with you. Regularity, contextuality, and writing down are really meaningful cases to learn new words.

  8. There are many ways to learn new vocabulary, but for me the best technique is memorizing and using the words in the conversations. First of all, find the words that you think are important to you or your studies and you want to use them frequently. Next, write down their definitions to fill up vocabulary with synonyms and better understand the meaning of the word. The last and the most important thing: try to remember them and use in your conversations.

    1. Hello, Roman!
I agree with you, practice makes perfect, and to get familiar with words you have to get used to implementing your theoretical knowledge into speaking.

  9. I consider memorizing words to be easier in context. When I have to learn some new words I get into examples of using these words in sentences and typical collocations. This helps you not to make a mistake in speaking and opens many more contextual variants.

    1. Hello, Max!
I agree with you, giving examples, knowing the context in which it is used, helps to explain things more clearly and gives your mind the opportunity for creativity.

  10. Every person has his own way to learn words effectively. In my opinion, the best way to remember new words is to recognize its meaning in each context, then write down them on paper and return to them a few days later. Thus, it will be done gladly and usefully.

    1. Hello, Alena.
I share your point of view. In my opinion, memorizing new words without context is rather difficult. I`ve noticed that I better memorize new words while reading a book, especially if the word is repeated over and over again.

  12. As for me, the best technique is also use some additional apps aiming at remebering new words. The most favourite one is the Quizlet. When adding words there, it offers different ways of memorizing it, like dictations from your native language to foreign one and vice verca and others. Sometimes I use such app as Ligualeo. It has the same purpose, but tasks are sometimes more interesting.
